Forget the iPad Pro - Samsung plots 18in monster tablet

While rumours of a 12in iPad Pro continue to gather momentum, it looks like Samsung is planning to trump its rival's super-sized tablet - and then some. The company is reportedly preparing to launch an 18.4in tablet for use in homes, offices and schools.

The specs of the monster tablet, codenamed Tahoe, were leaked to SamMobile . Disappointingly, the TFT screen will only have a Full HD resolution, giving the 18.4in tablet a lower resolution than the company's 5.1in flagship smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S6 , which has a 2,560 x 1,440 screen.

It will run on an octa-core 1.6GHz Exynos 7580 processor, 2GB of RAM and have 32GB of built-in storage, with a microSD card slot able to supplement the onboard storage by another 128GB. The device will have a 5,700mAh battery, which is actually weaker than the 8,220mAh battery found inside last year's well received Galaxy TabPRO 10.1 , although to be fair to Samsung, you're not likely to be popping an 18in tablet in your bag for the commute to work.

The device will measure 45 x 28 x 1.1cm, which is roughly the size of a dinner tray. There's no details of how much this Android-based beast is going to weigh, however.

It's questionable if a market even exists for these super slabs. Sony released a 20in all-in-one that could be folded flat and used as a tablet when Windows 8 was launched back in 2012, but despite positive reviews, there wasn't a queue of manufacturers lining up to launch clones of the VAIO Tap 20 and Sony has now stopped making PCs altogether.

There's no word on a launch date or price for the 18.4in tablet. Samsung is also reported to be developing a 12in tablet for Windows 10, which will include the Intel Core M processor found inside the MacBook , 4GB of RAM and Samsung's S Pen stylus.
